NOMAD Jacket – Always on the move!
That was the lead words for this creation, missing a wind stopper in the inventory I decided on making one…
(ouch ..that sounded easy 😉
The jacket I had in mind would not only fit under your regular uniform jacket but also work on its own as a spring/summer – easy on easy off jacket, and of course it would need some tweaking TUG Style to get that extra out of it!
I had this really thin and nice Arktis wind stopper and liked it a lot, but it was more like a anorak with no full front zipper and I really wanted that, also it did not have a hood large enough and … pockets it was missing pockets!
I wanted the fabric to be green (we also had a M90K Desert version of the NOMAD in the end) and the fabric in ripstop with a sort of parachute feel to it! All of you that have come in contact with that fabric know the elegance and feel, I also needed it not to be to flimsy but rather a harmony between lining and outer shell – not to thick, not to thin!
Regarding pockets I wanted pockets on arms, chest and waist. Because of the fabric, the arm pockets I just chose to be flat – that is – not cargo type.
For the chest and waist pockets they would be all with zipper, a finer zipper but not fully ringspun that are so popular, but rather a mix of standard “teeth” adn the softer “ringspun” type.
To add to the look of the jacket I wanted covers over the front zippers, also flat band details in the higher chest area.
To make the jacket a bit more sturdy extra fabric was added to the shoulders and underarms and to make the jacket stand out a bit and also help prevent flapping drawstrings with cord locks was added both at bottom and also in the stomach area.
As not to forget about the simple lining, two pockets was added in the waist front, with no closure but rather simple holders for soft caps, gloves etc that is too bulky for the zipper pockets.
This added up to a total of 8 pockets but the jacket still kept its low profile which we are quite content with!
Contact with manufacturer went smooth and the rest is history, it took about a year to have them from idea to finished product!
As with all our products it is easy to be struck by hindsight.. what would we have done better etc.. there are some things about the NOMAD Jacket that we have stashed away for a possible A2 version in the future like:
Extra layer of fabric in the same fabric as rest of the jacket.
Larger hood and possible a way to hide it.
Hidden zippers rather than a flap over them.
Slanted arm pockets cargo style…..and some other stuff 😉
When writing this my own trusted NOMAD Jacket is hanging easily grabbable near the front door… and there is not a day that i don’t use it!
